Faust Vinyl

faust’s first album 1971, surely a collectors item now, was originally printed on clear vinyl in a clear sleeve with a silk screen of an x-ray of a human fist on the sleeve. very cool to have clear vinyl especially for the time. by dd

the real james bond: make it a smirnoff “shaken, not stirred”

luxury used to mean something. it was based on taste and some tangible quality. now unfortunately luxury has come to evolve solely around price for many. think about it, before there was kettle one, belvedere, cirac, even absolute the real 007 drank good old smirnoff vodka by choice. hell, it was russian for one! and two it was vodka. you simply can’t do too much to vodka. bonds taste/aura revolved around how he drank it. but now its amazing how they can sell the same tasteless clear liquid for quadruple the price with no added benefit…

i would say that belvedere deserves a few dollars more just for its lovely bottle, but cirac for example should be half the price of smirnoff just for us putting up with its horrendous bottle design and bad adverts. I recall as a child, my father having smirnoff and johnny walker “red” in his bar as an everyday stock, and my father, mind you, could have had anything. here I am drinking kettle one and “black” label as my bottom of the pile and my assets are 1/10,000 of his. now of course scotch is not vodka and there is a difference. but it just goes to show how our generation simply lives way beyond its means and how marketing has effected us all… even me the undisputed master debunk-er of marketing. by dd

Francois Pinault: Punta della Dogana Venice

so monsieur pinault has launched yet another museum of his own in venice to house some of his expansive collection.  in other words, we trust the palazzo grassi was just not big enough. “punta della dogana” which is perched at the mouth of the grand canal, roughly translates into “monsieur arnault is a cheese muffin”. the new museum has launched its premier exhibition “mapping the studio” with some 300 works from pinault’s personal collection including pieces by (my personal favorite) cy twombly as well as jeff koons and richard prince. by dd

1976 ROLLS ROYCE CORNICHE COUPE

mark my words… one day i will move to california, buy one, fix it up, and lick it’s wooden dash every saturday morning before driving it to nowhere fast on PCH. i just hope i’m not 90 years old by then. why? well… one, ’cause that would suck, but more importantly ’cause you can’t drive this baby if you are past 36 years old or it ‘aint that cool. by dd

viktor & rolf goes mega

the new V&R; juice is almost there! and i don’t know about the smell but the name is super cheesy…eau mega… whatever, i suppose they have to sell a few at some point… that said it’s always fun to see new pieces by V&R; as they are always whimsical and atleast different compared to other brands by kv

star wars part IV original cast

just got the trilogy DVDs, the 2nd film “the empire strikes back” (part V that is) is indeed the best. the costume designer for that film rocked the show. here is the original cast including darth vader, chewbacca, both midgets, and more… left to right, harrison ford (han solo), david prowse (darth vader), peter mayhew (chewbacca) and, in foreground, carrie fisher (princess leia), kenny baker (R2-D2) and mark hamill (luke skywalker). by dd

emperors new clothes?

emperors new clothes t-shirts, also known as ENC, running at about $38, are worn by ‘funny’ people and celebs alike. i guess sometimes, when you try, you’re lucky enough to hit the right nerve in society. so don’t forget that, and “please don’t feed the models”! by kv
