david bowie “pin ups” – the story behind the cover

“I remember distinctly that I’d got it with the first shot. It was too good to be true. When I showed Bowie the test Polaroids, he asked if he could use it for the Pin Ups record sleeve.

I said: “I don’t think so, since this is for Vogue. How many albums do you think you will sell?”

“A million,” he replied.

“This is your next album cover!” I said.

When I got back to London and told Vogue, they never spoke to me again. Several weeks later, Twigs and I were driving along Sunset Boulevard and we passed a 60ft billboard of the picture. I knew I had made the right decision.”

Justin de villeneuve on the picture he made that ended up being the cover of bowie’s “pin ups”.  the entire story here by pp+tg.

well as if we didn’t already know how much curriculum in high school and junior high schools has changed, take a gander at this incredible pamphlet from janus films.  this was handed out to teens around the time chris marker released the film to coincide with the film being shown in class.  clearly, i studied under the wrong individuals throughout my adolescence.  i think david bowie and terry gilliam would both be proud.  anyway, this film was and still is extraordinary and fundamental to any cinephile’s consciousness. by sv

stanley Kubrick meets bowie – ligne roset’s facett chair

designed by the great french duo ronan & erwan bouroullec the armchairs were first introduced to me at the ICFF show by a friend/architect when they where launched. i loved them immediately for their comfort and pure aesthetic, but the +5K price tag kept me thinking. eventually, i acquired two facett chairs and one footrest (my guests are usually foot-less) and they have become a centerpiece in my home ever since. pros: love the origami inspired pure shape, the lovely white leather, detailed sticking, and hand work.  cons: easy to tilt (when drunk, or reaching for a glass), a bit of a surprising choice on the velcro enclosure on the back. grey felt version highly recommended if you can ban children below 21 from entry. by dd
