ketevane maissaia is a young eyewear designer who won the IFM (french institute of fashion) prize in 2010. the IFM is a competition which allows young design students to see their creations made in association with big houses (YSL, dior, prada, etc). it’s a hell of a spectacle, ,but i like it… this unisex eyewear has been made in partnership with thierry lasry brand, and is available in black, white and red options. may we recommend the black… its loud enough as is. by dd

artist mike kelley dead at age 57
i remember mike from his quote, “if a bear shits in the forest will anyone hear it?” …or something to that extent. he taught at my school, i remember him with his long hair and guitar. i was never a huge fan of his knitted stuffed dolls or object works, but i loved his sense of humor. it’s sad to hear he’s no longer with us, and that he took his own life. lee ranaldo and the sonic youth crew will surely miss him too. here’s what our friend lee had to say about him on his blog. wim wenders – pina
so after waiting for almost a year, pina, wim wenders homage movie to pina bausch is on screen in nyc at ifc… and that was worth the wait. i remember this interview of him saying that seeing a pina bausch show was a life changing experience and after viewing the movie i’m sure it’s not quite far from it. on top of that, i was a bit skeptical about the 3d thing but i have to say that it really topped the cake. a must see. check the trailer here. by pp.

well as if we didn’t already know how much curriculum in high school and junior high schools has changed, take a gander at this incredible pamphlet from janus films. this was handed out to teens around the time chris marker released the film to coincide with the film being shown in class. clearly, i studied under the wrong individuals throughout my adolescence. i think david bowie and terry gilliam would both be proud. anyway, this film was and still is extraordinary and fundamental to any cinephile’s consciousness. by sv

precession of the equinoxes
every once in a while it must cross your mind, this rumor about december 21st 2012 being a turning point for ‘life as we know it’. this is sparked by the sudden end to the mayan calendar, which even contemporary astronomers and science in general revere as impressive. so… what’s going to happen? well, it has been mapped out that earth’s movement in our universe, multiverse, whatever, is called the precession of the equinoxes, which means its gravitational ecliptic around the sun fluxes, as it has a small angle on its orbital plane, through a cycle of 26000yrs (as my very basic understanding of it goes). this year, on december 21st the earth will align with the dark rift, the center of the milky way, basically the galactic equator. this is meant to effect our poles which are now moving at 40miles/yr (where only in 2005 we thought the rate of 25mi/yr was too much) and therefore climate migratory instincts. ecosystems will have to reset. but, ‘they’ also say this is a moment for human consciousness, and like your alarm clock, after the power stops even for a second, will have to be reset purposefully. let me put it this way…

maybe the paradigm shift will be as simple as work to live or living to create rather than living to work. i’m no different,a little bit guilty of pride and ambition as well, or should i say victim to it? it’s difficult in our world, raised with praise and approvals, gauging respect via associations. i don’t think we’re weak to be in this habit, but it’s a first step to be able to step back. that hopefully soon the garbage that clutters stores and individually sanitizes our nutrition will disappear and we will actually see one another and connect rather than feel safer with our differences. can you tell i had a long week? ooh, i know what will help! …
