riccardo tisci – a magazine – curated by

came across this nice issue of the wonderful “a magazine”. the guest editor in chief was givenchy’s riccardo tisci and the aesthetic is a little dark but the overall piece is really beautiful. feels really refreshing to have a magazine that is not $50, not filled with crap ads and totally editorial free… that was released some years ago so there is very little chance to buy it anywhere but that is not the only purpose of things, right? by pp

quelques portraits de dandys – eugene marsan

eugene marsan’s book “quelques portraits de dandys” is a little gem published by “l’editeur singulier”. it’s just a few pages about dandy’s such as maurice barrès, jules barbey d’aurevilly, charles baudelaire, honoré de balzac, stendhal and so on. the author focus on details such as press pants or the details of a cane to relate those french dandys. anyway, everything is cool in this book, from the cover to the pictures, here 9 portraits of charles baudelaire. love it! by pp

the anarchy of silence: john cage, museu d’art contemporani de barcelona

with bionce crashing our party i thought why not talk about some music. like “the anarchy of silence” by john cage. now, for the record, can we please beg lady gaga here to not appropriate?

ok, so this is one of the most beautiful books i have come across in recent years. the book published by henie onstad art center is a pricey soft cover book with a lot of inspiration hidden inside it (used copies can be found on amazon for $130). i picked up my new untouched copy at st. marks bookstore in new york for under a $100 but no idea if they have any left. not much unlike his music, beautiful unobtrusive designs of text create a lovely pace between photographs and sketches of cage. the hand drawn notes are truly amazing and the book as a whole shows a lot of confidence on behalf of its creators. another franklin well spent. by dd

the olivier theysken book

wow! photographer julien claessens looks back at olivier theyskens’ career thus far. in this special edition book claessens shows us the results of his unprecedented backstage access to theyskens’ fashion shows. with text by everyone’s favorite vogue lady (after the september issue) sally singer the book sounds to good to be true. but go ahead and see it for yourself flick at assouline. coming soon for $120… by dd

below: additional studies by the young architect

a young masters graduate of harvard university and a current member of Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron‘s offices (china: birds nest) in switzerland, ahmad reza schricker’s future in architecture looks rather promising. the book “function of form” published and bearing his name coincided with his departure from the US and is a great find for archi-aficianados and MIT brains alike. we’ll be looking forward to seeing more of his work. by dd

Barely private: by sante D’Orazio – ed ruscha

since the crash of the economy it seems like we are all attending more parties rather than pulling late nighters. that, i assume, is the silver lining in all of this. the good news is that not all parties are just to wine-and-dine new yorks newest most-needy-class. this was waris’ week. this shindig, at the newly re-opened pierre hotel (owned previously by the 4 seasons group) had something substantial behind it, an effort to remind us of not only the beauty of india, but to support the victims of mumbai’s 2008 terrorist attack.

the book is filled with memories and photographs of contributors like silvia fendi, elizabeth hurley, natalie portman, owen wilson and the like from their past visits to india. owen wilsons photo taken by his mom was one that stood out for me. unfortunately the book, published by respected publisher assouline, was rather disappointing for its lack of attention to detail and their hack-saw compositions. the love put in by waris and the gang somehow did not translate into the assouline’s team. that said, i personally bought 2 books and highly recommend a copy as the proceeds will go directly to the victims of the attack. hard cover $49.95

contributors include: Adrien Brody, Kenneth Cole, Silvia Fendi, Diane von Furstenberg, Elizabeth Hurley, Evelyn Lauder, Natalie Portman, Rachel Roy, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Williamson, among others. to learn more mumbai: we got your back. by dd
