restraint, it’s a beautiful thing

a short film featuring the lovely tiiu kuik by daemian smith and christine suarez. it’s a feast for the eyes, but like most fashion films it’s a bit of a nonsense.  pretty yet random pictures spliced together on finalcut, and the gorgeous track by violinist michael galasso (wong kar-wai’s film in the mood for love) is once again belittled in yet another random clip. i can envision michael roll over in his grave each time this track is used. i am actually not dissing them at all, as i can understand the devastating temptation for anyone to try and want to recreate an ounce of that magic when maggie drifted past the camera to this track. even i contemplated it a few times but the best of me took over. just remember this:

“what makes someone truly great is not only about what they do, but what they choose not to do when it’s most tempting.”

its almost like sex (think about it) or let me put it a different way, it’s like being a publisher of a magazine and “surprisingly” picking yourself to shoot the covers (like rankin did) or putting your mug on every other page (like zahm did), how obvious, easy and lame is that? again i could have done any of that but i didn’t. i always felt that you have to earn it to own it. restraint, it’s a beautiful thing…. you know its been almost 15 years that i have wanted this specific and rather costly chess set.  one day, a few years ago, my mom said “you talk about this so much Ill get it for you for your birthday.” i was crushed.  she didn’t get it, i’m simply not  good enough at chess to deserve that set… but i haven’t given up yet. maybe one day I’ll earn it!  by uh

danse macabre

the bewitchingly charming dance sequence from jean renoir’s the rules of the game.  hard to believe that he thought this film was a failure, i suppose that is the curse of those with infamous fathers?  anyway, enjoy this as much as i do.  by sv

Wolf Magik: it never was by alexis blaire

a surprising new track from our friends “alexis blaire”. i heard the track “it never was” once and i downloaded the track from itunes. the album is a bit raw, and that’s great when it works, and it does at least on this track for me, but i’m a bit of a music snob if that says anything. if not, then i also prefer indians to cowboys, so there. by xy

and then…he licked me!

leos carax’s short from the film tokyo also featured MERDE and his foolish shenanigans.  take a peek at some of them here, but most certainly watch the entire short if you have the chance.  i saw it in the theater, and have been laughing ever since. by sv

trailer for leos carax’s latest film holy motors

saw this film tonight, and what a wild ride that was. highly recommended. if you are a leos carax fan you will probably see this, as it’s his first film in 13 years. i will not tell you much about it as i highly suggest you go in without knowing anything. i knew just the basic premise, and i can tell you that stopped the film from being as great as it could be. think mullholand drive, breathless, pixar’s cars, american musicals, horror films, and then some… go in, sit back, and let it take you for a crazy ride. it surely is not your usual blockbuster. it’s witty, strange, and fantastic. by dd

moon: how the moon was created and why its not much different than earth in composition

the moon has remained largely unchanged during human history

for a long time it has been thought that the moon was result of an impact between the early earth and another planet-sized object, thea, 4.5 billion years ago.  this is of course, way before god actually created earth in just three days leaving the other three for the heavens.

“but this theory predicts earth and its satellite, the moon, should have a quite different chemical make-up – but the data shows in fact they are very similar (the oxygen isotope, or atom type, compositions on earth are identical to that on the moon.). now, new modeling, explored in two papers published this week by the journal science, reveals that if the earth had a much faster spin before the impact, the theory fits the chemistry.

the giant impact hypothesis was first posited in the 1970s. it holds that the moon formed from the debris kicked into orbit by the collision of a smaller proto-planet with the infant earth. but the early models indicated that much of this debris would have originated from the impactor, whose composition would most probably have differed substantially from that of earth.

the new run simulations show that the early earth was rotating on its axis in just a few hours prior to the impact – compared to the present 24 hours. in such a scenario, the team could get debris material thrown into a moon-forming disc around the earth that had the right chemical make-up. in other words, it was substantial earth material from its mantle that was ejected in the collision.

after the impact, the gravitational interaction between the sun and the moon could then have slowed the fast rotation of the earth to the speed we now experience. a different team simulated a different route, their simulations involved larger impactors hitting an earth of comparable size and at comparatively lower speeds. again, the team was able to produce a moon with the same chemical composition as the earth. addressing the questions about the impact theory and why the compositions where so close.” from BBC by xy
