the art of not blogging
oh child, spare me. everything i love about bill cunningham, is what i hate about scott schuman. they are the opposite poles in the same sector. bill is a spirit, the other pure flesh. bill is about life the other about fame. bill is about grit the other about flash. bill is about art the other about business. bill is about love… bill is humble… bill is light and the rest is darkness. in the end ,it does come to be about who you are as a person and bill is the epitome of all that i love about new york. no offense! when you become famous, you have to be able to take some shit. scott is surely loved and respected by many and i can be the one hater (not sure he can handle that). sorry i see no interest in satorialist or scott’s work nor his fame or how business smart he is. business smartness and fame mean nothing to me, if anything they tell me a bit about who you are and it’s generally not good. that brand is built on pandering to the status quo, not supporting the the fringe that feeds that status quo. when you photograph a bunch of vain editors and models after the shows you too can expect guaranteed traffic. bill just never wanted the attention or the fame or the money. i admire that tremendously. by dd

boyce & brown: a universe of possibilities
with tatiana cotliar (next). nice clip by ex creative director harrison boyce & director nathaniel brown. you may recall our posts on a similar style of work about a year or so ago, now you can add this to one the mix. with film becoming such an approachable medium and available to so many different disciplines, we are excited about the experimentation and possibilities it holds. something less literal and more poetic awaits us all. by dd

Krishnamurti – The Real Revolution
today’s ultimate irony was that i earnestly attempted to watch this series of a documentary on (not philosopher or religious leader) but ‘thinker’ jiddu krishnamurti while multitasking, doing research, and liking images on tumblr. it’s typical for new york to inflict ADD on its citizens, but i don’t like that excuse. i think i have some work to do. step one, sit through four hours of half-speed musings life, or read some of this. by kl
love, it’s the most important quality a revolutionary must possess –ernesto “che” guevara
after that post on hemingway and castro, i ended up watching the 4 hour IFC film “che” directed by steven soderbergh and starring benicio del toro (who won at the cannes film festival for best actor) as a convincing, despite slightly overweight, ernesto che guevara. the film is in spanish with an english subtitle. it’s the best film i’ve seen on che, and despite it’s high budget production, it retains the grit of the era. love the vintage documentary footage mixed in with the grainy b&w mockumentary footage and the high-def muted color film. with the UN in full swing right now it’s worth a watch just to hear che’s 1965 UN speech. beautifully romantic and idealistic. by xy

TS… Meet ST
do you have bands or acts that you have said to yourself you need to see before you die? well i have plenty, and this weekend i was fortunate enough to scratch one of these bands off my list: suicidal tendencies. fronted by mike muir, younger brother of jim muir one of the original z-boys from venice beach skate days, suicidal combines many genres from punk/surf/thrash to metal and funk with a cali vato loco vibe. the energy was amazing, the sound was perfect and the band was tight, being that they are all serious professional musicians. a while back, suicidal collaborated with vans to release a suicidal X vans shoe as an ode to the original vans style of pool skating. by jr

playboy club bunnies circa 1960’s

the original Playboy Club in 1960’s Chicago is the centerpiece of the playboy club TV show and above trailer. set in 60’s and much like the upcoming pan-am show it’s a coat-tailer to mad men’s success. we’ll see how well it does.
playboy is one of the iconic magazines of the century, and it’s a shame what has become of it these days. magazines like paradis and others tried to emulate the early days of playboy but never as popular or successful as the mag once was. in its early glory days, playboy was much more than just a nudie mag. the clubs were cool, and a place the top liners wanted to be at. it had some of the greatest writers contributing to the magazine and discussing serious progressive issues. it was political, cultural, and it actually had girls you’d want to be with. that changed in the 70’s, and it progressively became worse, where finally it ended up being a truck drivers wet dream. french playboy in the late 90’s-2000 managed to implement a shift and made the french edition a better mag. french playboy used good photographers and models, but somehow in this world of ours; good things don’t sell. it closed down a few years ago leaving us with the horrendous US version. the playboy club TV show that is set to launch this month promises to revamp that era’s image but unfortunately, as displayed at the recent launch of the playboy club in london, the brand’s decay is deeper than imagined. it’s a brand with massive potential and a shame nothing is being done. we need a young hefner in charge. we propose dd for the task ; ) by xy
