portraits de villes

portraits de villes is a serie of books edited by be-pole studio, every city is shot by a great photographer. love the idea and the simple and honest look of the collection. check it if you find them. i’m wondering who i would have chosen to photographed my favorite cities if i had the choice to commission my own collection… hmmmm.. by pp.

la maison de verre – francois halard

i was really glad last week when i saw thames&hudson re-released the book on the glass house by photographer francois halard. seeing the pile reducing seriously everytime i was passing by mcnally jackson (which by the way is the best place to get books and mag in the city) made me wonder if the fact that the new york times made a great article about the house recently was the reason or just general interest. now i’m crossing my fingers that they will also re-release the book on the villa malaparte by mr halard as well… by pp.

oublier modiano – marie lebey

france sometimes like to look its past a bit too much. i guess it can become an issue for some people, it’s a bit more of a situation when it comes to a country. anyway, out of those people turned on the past, cult french writer patrick modiano is somehow different. he’s books really smell this french nostalgia that is not so sexy and that maybe only french can get. at least author marie lebey gets it, and she gets it so much that she decided to go to all the places that patrick modiano talks about in his book. on top of going there, she decided to shoot them and publishing house leo scheer take on to make it into a book. i’m kind of relieved and intrighued at the same time because going to places from a book or so this is the kind of thing i would do, it’s a bit of a old school stalking, isn’t it? going back to the book, i don’t know why she decided to call it “oublier modiano” (forget modiano) but the author is said to be really furious, i guess it’s not in its plan to be forget…

in the book, she copied few lines from the book related to the place she photographed. i think the all thing is really moving.  by pp.

some more helmut’s in the pipes

we will never have enough of helmut’s! well, that’s great because taschen seams to be soon  releasing a book of his polaroids, not the ones that are already in an other book, those ones were the test shots, with comments written on it. it is said that helmut’s wife june was never giving them away and was trading shots to everyone, even people on set wanting a “souvenir”. i read somewhere else that they used to give them away to some of their guests writing their names on them for diners table seating… anyway, a book is in the pipe. by pp.
