‘The Clock’ by Christian Marclay

how much can you fit into one day? is this a 24 hour interpretation of the new york minute? seriously. but when i unsuspectingly came across this piece at the hayward last fall, with no recognition other than the fact the artist was represented by White Cube, i was refreshed and impressed. it’s been a while since we’ve seen something that is both welcoming to experience and provides an experience that makes you a little more conscious of your own. basically that time moves at different paces. christian marclay won the golden lion award at this year’s venice biennale for this time obsessed version of  a day. by kl

taryn simon – a threat of uncovered worlds

detective taryn simon uses photography to reveal worlds and people we would never see otherwise. i’m sure her underlying talent is as a smooth talker, as she has executed some of the most interesting and dryly humorous explorations in modern imagery. somehow this contemporary art princess was a threat so great walt disney world couldn’t even indulge her.  by kl

that’s entertainment: the jam without the butter

sorry to piss on this pop parade, but i’m still lost in the mod galaxy thanx to ar. this song was most influential with bands like bauhaus and tons on tail and the rest that followed. this was when the term “unplugged” meant you were straight, not on MTV. the simple drum and acoustic strum with potent words was a stand out. what is amazing is that although i still love this song, to this day, this is the first i’m seeing this clip myself, and just the other day i was saying how its so funny that every punk, rock, grunge, etc. band that come up and claims to be different, ends up grabbing a guitar and striking the same damn pose on stage, legs apart, leaning back like dee dee and waking the poor guitar to death. i was saying how cool would it be for a punk band to sit on a stool and settle down for a change? and here you have it with paul weller… from electric circus to this within a year. i guess i just like the way they did things with such ease. also if interested here is a very funny interview in sweden with paul weller. by xy

Flight Facilities: crave you

this is pretty 4th of july appropriate, i think i counted 63 flags in there… good track by the mysterious aussie dj duo, flight facilities, whom prefer to remain anonymous however have managed to tour japan and elsewhere in 2010-2011 or so i’m told… (how do you remain really anonymous and tour is beyond me but ok). giselle rosselli (not related to the master) who collaborated on this track is amazing and the song summery sweet. there is probably 20 remixes of this but this one is my fav pop indulgence, if i ever had any. i really “relaaaate to this” cause i do play with puppies and snake and do headstands and splits when i’m home alone too. we have tho much in common. by dd

the imperialists are still alive: my first film

saw this film tonight on netflix simply because i liked the poster graphics. after a few minutes in, i was about to skip the film, but then entered the “sweet mexican boy”, jose maria de tavira and i gave him a chance. it’s not a “great” film by any means, but a good first film by a daring woman who tackles a worthy topic.  the film, written and directed by zeina durra, follows french actress elodie bouchez as the jordanian, bosnian, palestinian, french born trustafarian living in NY pursuing what any rich young person would, if they could… art. the artists house maid and the margiela bag sequence are fun little anecdotes in an otherwise paranoid atmosphere. if you are a new yorker you’ll probably recognize some of the usual fixtures and characters in the LES and china town hoods. unfortunately this film does not pass the rigorous test to be posted under our “must see films” but it is a film worth a watch or it wouldn’t even be here. by dd

the sacred act of eating eggs

take a moment to think about the act of eating an egg. do pro lifers eat eggs? i guess they also hunt verging extinct species from perches and flying things. an egg is a precious thing to sacrifice to your breakfast. and do men consume eggs differently than women? interesting. take a moment and give it some love. by kl

the review of the film: shoe by Andre Saraiva

the film shoe by swedish-born, french adopted, graffiti artist monsieur a, turned club owner and man-about-town is finally here. the first installment, or perhaps trailer, with a very long title sequence launched this weekend on nowness. nowness, for the record, is owned by LVMH and was previously known as e-luxury, which was shut down and re-grounded into its current format, an editorial site to squeeze goods in, between goods. the part one clip (posted here) does have a nice title sequence by andre reminiscent of saul bass and other 60’s giants. it was also nicely colorized and filmed in paris, where we follow the “metatarsus varus” french actor walkabout town and kiss a girl. the plot really steams up when he hands out two cigarettes to two seated girls. when asked, olivier zahn, the co-writer of this so far silent film, said “the film is about a character very close to any young french guy who likes to flirt with girls in paris.” very interesting and unusual indeed! the depth here reminds me of the early days of purple. when it was in a book format and co-published by elein fleiss. now of course we don’t want to speak prematurely without seeing the entire film, but if the intention here was to intrigue, we are still awaiting the intrigue. by dd
