Picasso once said : Good artists borrow, great artists steal

i don’t know where i would place artist sam taylor wood in the master’s sentence, but i’ve always loved figuring out where an artist’s inspiration comes from.  i’m sure everyone has had the feeling of being so sure that an artist’s piece reminds one of another artist’s work and think that it might have inspired him/her…

well sam taylor wood’s work is obviously based on reinterpreting references, as in her earlier work, when her work was rather painting-like. she later introduced the the suspended pictures that are based on “le saut” (the jump) from yves klein.

so all that just to tell you that i’m pretty sure the crying men is a smart modernization of bas jan ader‘s finest work “i’m too sad to tell you”. by pp’

What horse : The Slovenian Lipizzaner

(pardon the most annoying announcer) but very interesting history explaining the purpose of these silly moves with the Lipizzaner stallions. they are especially interesting when you consider yourself for a moment, as a soldier, in the old times when a sword, a horse, and your skill were all you had to go to the battle. sort of like my heroes, the Samarias. no night vision goggles, smart bombs, F-18’s, or helicopter cover.

“The Lipizzaner breed is a very compact and muscular breed, with very powerful hindquarters.
These magnificent white horses were named after a tiny Slovenian village and stud farm called Lipica only a stone’s throw from the Adriatic coast. Most Lipizzans measure between 15 and 16 hands high. They exhibit a long head, the jaw is rather pronounced, the ears small, the eyes large and the nostrils are flared. Most always, they are gray. Like all gray horses, they have black skin, dark eyes and as an adult, a white hair coat. They are generally associated with the Spanish Riding School, home of the World Famous “Lipizzaner Stallions”. Today, though found in many nations throughout Europe and North America, the breed is relatively rare, with only about 3,000 horses registered worldwide. The number of foals born each year is small, and breeders take extreme care to preserve the purity of the breed. Lipizzan horses tend to mature slowly. However, they live and are active longer than many other breeds, with horses performing the difficult exercises of the Spanish Riding School well into their 20’s and living into their 30’s.” by dd

LP art may be back : ITUNES COCKTAIL

ziggy quit smoking right after this album

and michael schenker went to jail right after this album!!! **

sonic youth, david bowie, glenn gould, scorpions. enter “cocktail”: thanks to apple, here is a new digital music format that the creators of itunes are developing with record labels. the new format will go beyond a simple PDF file of liner notes, and instead bundle photos, videos, lyrics and other assets with an album’s music. details remain slim, but label sources confirming the effort’s existence point to it as the digital version of the record sleeves of the old days. by dd

** scorpions shocking cover was released in 1976 stirring controversy in the UK, US, and elsewhere resulting in an alternative cover of the band in some countries and making this a collectors item. in 2008, the image again gave rise to controversy, when the british internet watch foundation placed pages from wikipedia containing the cover on its blacklist, causing significant public debate. the decision was reversed by the IWF after four days of blocking.

the latest Bosendorfer grand piano

certain things… you just don’t mess with. like the shape of a grand piano. they all bear the same shape for a good reason, because the shape was not meant as design but for its acoustic function. that said audi has “broken the rules”… (wow, so punk to do that?), with it’s design for the bosendorfer piano’s 100 year ear mark with this contraption which appears to simply drape an old shape.

the piano is available for an approximate $140,000 and we can somehow rest assured that bosendorfer will not make anything short of amazing sounding objects. that said we’ll have to wait to hear the real auditions… had he been alive, i would have loved to see glenn gould’s reaction to this one… by dd
