leave it to adam curtis to set the records straight. the story of the relationship between sigmund freud and his american nephew, edward bernays. bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take freud’s ideas to manipulate the masses. he showed american corporations how they could make people want things they didn’t need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires. bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, using every trick in the book, from celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts, to eroticising the motorcar. his most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. but bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. it was a new political idea of how to control the masses. by satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile. it was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today’s world. originally broadcast on 29th april 2002. by uh

anna ardin was referred to as “miss a”, she was 31 at the time, and was working as an unofficial go-between for assange and journalists during his visit to stockholm. she also offered him her apt upon his arrival on august 11. they had sex several times at her one-room stockholm flat, giving details that were blocked out of the police transcript.

saw this years ago, but how relevant and true this holds today with president donald trump and the disappearance of truth and the normalization of injustice and falsehoods. definitely worth a watch again if you have already seen this. And a must if you have never seen it.

I mean how horrible can people be to look past the brave efforts of this young girl, risking financial and physical damage to save a strangers life she believes is at risk. these horrible people consider her action to be fueled by self promotion? if this is how people do self promotion, and chase after their 5 minutes of fame, then be it… how fantastic that would be. yuuuuuge respects for swedish lioness elin ersson, so impressed with your bravery and conviction the world needs more of you. aside from the julian assange incident, i think i simply love sweden and even more now. we love you erin xx. by kt

who made this documentary? zembla. they are a dutch television program. the documentaries are based on in-depth research. a documentary in 2001 about fraud in the dutch construction sector led to parliamentary inquiries. in may 2006, the program exposed the fact that politician ayaan hirsi ali had lied in her claim for asylum, which led to her resignation from parliament. this documentary was made in 2017 it has not lead to any resignations yet! more on zembla.

dan carlin is an american political commentator and podcaster. he has several episodes on historical topics that can be downloaded from itunes onto your phone under the titles: “common sense” and “hardcore history.”
he is genuine enough, and intelligent enough, to always point out what parts are recorded facts and what parts are interpretations by various historians, all of which should be taken with a grain-of-salt and researched independantly. you will NOT find any alternative facts in these pod casts, “believe me.”
my favorite is the series hardcore history, blueprint for armageddon. when this was first recommended to me by hk i thought, a) i don’t do podcasts, and b) there is no way i’m going to listen to so many hours of some dude talking. mind you, i have gone through the entire episode and i listened to the last one several time because i simply did not want to end it. highly recommended. here is the link to dan’s website, or you can simply go to the podcasts icon on your i-phone and type in “hardcore history.” its free for the time being (but i think dan should start charging for these). enjoy the show. by uh
